The Edinburgh Festival Cavalcade is a free public event where many of the performers from the Fringe Festival and Edinburgh Tattoo parade on floats and dress up in costumes which also includes community groups and marching bands. The Cavalcade parade this year featured many local community groups and began with the huge roaring noise of harley davidson motorbikes.

This year’s event is sponsored by the City of Edinburgh Council and the Scottish Sun. The Edinburgh Festival Cavalcade 2008 started with the entire cast of thr 2008 Edinburgh Military Tattoo who were then followed by over three thousand performers from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The parade has traditionally always taken place on Princes Street, Edinburgh’s most famous and second longest street, next to Leith Walk.

This year’s event featured drumming, brass music, band music, karate, samba sounds, some of the Fringe’ top comedians and some familar tunes can be heard such as Colonel Bogey march and the Jurassic Park theme music.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the biggest arts festival in the world. It was established in 1946 as a contrast to the Edinburgh International Festival. The Festival takes place for four weeks during the month of August in Edinburgh. Comedy and Theatre are popular features of the event although music and dance is prominent too.

The difference between the International Festival and the Fringe is that there is no selection committee to approve the entries. This often means more experimental works. The Royal Mile is famous for it’s street performers who can be highly entertaining. Edinburgh is widely known for it’s annual festivals, it’s even had the name, the Festival City in place for many years.

Some of the festivals ongoing in Edinburgh include the; Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe which includes the annual Cavalcade signalling the start of the Festival and the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June.

There is also the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival, Edinburgh Mela and the Edinburgh International Internet and Magic Festival which took place a few years ago. It’s clear that we are certainly Festival mad! This doesn’t even include the Royal Highland Show or Leith Festival. These festivals above are only the warmer month festivals that take place.

There is also the Edinburgh International Television Festival, Celidh Culture, the Edinburgh International Harp Festival, International Science Festival, OneEighty, Edinburgh Easter Festival, Beltane Fire Festival, Dark City Festival, Children’s International Theatre Festival, Edinburgh World Justice Festival, Meadows Festival, Scottish Storytelling Festival and finally Edinburgh’s Capital Christmas and Hogmanay celebrations.
